About Social Security Disability:

The Federal Social Security Disability Act §223(D)(1)(a) defines “disability”, in relevant part, as the “inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months.” 

Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits are available to disabled individuals and qualifying family members if such individuals have worked long enough, recently enough and paid taxes into the Social Security System.

Supplemental Security Income Benefits (SSI) are available to disabled adults who have limited income and resources and to disabled minor children whose parents are eligible for Social Security benefits and who have limited income and resources.  SSI benefits are also payable to people 65 people and older without disabilities who meet the financial guidelines.  
 
For most individuals, the medical requirements for disability payments are the same under both programs and disability is determined by the same process.
